Jobs & Employment News

The labor market — the most important indicator of an economy's real health.

What is Jobs & Employment?

Employment data measures hiring, unemployment, wages, and labor force participation. Major releases: US Non-Farm Payrolls (NFP, first Friday monthly), JOLTS (job openings), Unemployment Insurance Claims (weekly), Average Hourly Earnings. India: PLFS (Periodic Labour Force Survey). UK: ONS Labour Market Stats. Unemployment rate = unemployed ÷ labor force. The "true" unemployment rate (U-6 in US) includes part-time-for-economic-reasons workers.

Why it matters for investors

The labor market drives consumption (~70% of US GDP), inflation (wage-price dynamics), and central bank decisions (Fed dual mandate includes employment). Strong employment supports asset prices but can stoke inflation; weakening employment signals recession but supports lower rates. The unemployment rate is among the most-watched economic statistics.

Frequently asked questions

Why does NFP move markets so much?

It's the broadest, timeliest gauge of US employment. Hot NFP (>200K) signals economic strength but inflation pressure (Fed hawkish). Weak NFP (<100K) signals slowdown (Fed dovish). Surprises vs. consensus drive the largest moves.

What is wage-price spiral?

A self-reinforcing cycle where rising wages push up prices, which prompts workers to demand higher wages, etc. Central banks closely watch wage growth — sustained 4%+ wage growth is incompatible with 2% inflation targets in most economies.
