India GST slabs
India's Goods and Services Tax (since July 2017) replaced multiple federal and state taxes with a single unified system. Five main slabs apply:
- 0% — Essential food items, healthcare, education
- 5% — Common-use household items, transport
- 12% — Standard processed food, smartphones
- 18% — Most goods + services (default)
- 28% — Luxury, sin goods, premium vehicles
CGST + SGST vs IGST
Intra-state (sale within the same state): split into CGST (Centre's share) + SGST (State's share), each half of the slab rate.
Inter-state (sale across state lines): single IGST at full slab rate, collected by Centre and later split.
