About the rates

Rates come from the European Central Bank's daily reference data, refreshed every 10 minutes. These are mid-market rates — the wholesale rate banks use to trade with each other.

The rate you actually get when sending money or paying with a card is usually 1-4% worse than mid-market. Banks and exchanges add a spread; some are transparent about it, others bake it into the “rate” they show you.

For travellers and remittances

• Multi-currency cards (Wise, Revolut, Charles Schwab, Chase Sapphire) typically give you mid-market rates with low or no markup.
• Bank wire transfers often have hidden FX markups of 2-4% plus a flat fee.
• Airport currency exchange kiosks are usually 5-15% worse than mid-market. Avoid.

For investors

When market.news shows a price like “Hyundai earned ₹X crore” — convert to your currency here for context. Cross-country comparisons in financial news only make sense once you normalize.
