How retirement projections work
Three things grow your retirement corpus: your existing savings, monthly contributions, and compound returns over time. The longer your money compounds, the more dramatic the growth — that's why starting early matters more than starting big.
The 4% safe withdrawal rate
The famous "4% rule" (from the Trinity Study) says you can safely withdraw 4% of your retirement corpus annually, adjusted for inflation, with high probability of not running out over 30 years. Conservative retirees use 3.5%; aggressive use 5%. Pick what fits your risk tolerance.
Important caveats
- Returns shown are nominal (not adjusted for inflation). Real purchasing power = subtract ~3-5%/year for inflation.
- Tax treatment varies by country and account type (401k, NPS, ISA, RRSP, etc.)
- Sequence-of-returns risk: a market crash early in retirement is much worse than the same crash later.
