What is a 13F filing?

Form 13F-HR is a quarterly disclosure that US institutional investment managers with >$100M in qualifying equities must file with the SEC within 45 days after each quarter-end. The filing lists every reportable position: company, shares held, market value, and put/call options (if any).

Important caveat: 13Fs are lagging data. By the time you see Warren Buffett's Q4 2025 holdings filed in February 2026, the underlying positions are already 45-105 days old. Funds may have added to or exited positions in the meantime.

Why they still matter: 13Fs reveal conviction-level holdings (top 10 weights), spot new positions (a fund initiating a stake suggests deep research), and identify exits (selling completely is a strong negative signal). Long-term value funds' positions move slowly; high-turnover funds' filings are noisier.
