The listed real estate sector includes REITs (commercial property owners — see /tag/reits), homebuilders (D.R. Horton, Lennar, Persimmon, DLF, Godrej Properties), real estate services (CBRE, JLL), and property tech (Zillow, Redfin, MagicBricks). Real estate is highly local — demand drivers vary by city, country, and property type.

Why it matters for investors

Real estate is interest-rate sensitive (mortgages drive housing demand; cap rates determine commercial valuations), economically cyclical, and a major component of household wealth. Commercial real estate post-COVID has bifurcated — office struggling, industrial/data centers booming.

Is residential real estate a good hedge?

Historically a decent inflation hedge in supply-constrained markets. But high transaction costs, illiquidity, and concentration risk make it less efficient than REITs for portfolio diversification.
