KRW gains 71 won in July: G20's top currency move
Chosun Ilbo reports the Korean won strengthened by 71 won versus the dollar in July 2026 alone, making it the largest single-month appreciator among all G20 currencies. For KOSPI investors, a rapidly strengthening KRW is a double-edged signal: it attracts fixed-income and FX carry inflows but simultaneously compresses export earnings for Samsung, SK Hynix, Hyundai, and Kia in dollar terms. When KRW strengthens this fast, equity re-rating typically lags fixed-income inflows by 2-4 weeks — the current KOSPI weakness may be a positioning lag rather than a fundamental deterioration.
