Shopify AI Quarter: +17% Resets the TSX Tech Thesis
Financial Post confirmed Shopify's shares surged Wednesday on Q2 results showing AI-powered merchant analytics and inventory optimisation drove a 19% beat on gross merchandise volume estimates. At $144.24 (+$20.94), SHOP is back to levels last seen in early 2025, and the move matters at the index level: Shopify's market cap jump adds roughly 0.7–0.9 TSX Composite index points directly. The setup for TSX tech was already building; SHOP's print accelerated it. The BoC vs. Fed divergence is the residual risk — BoC cut to 3.0% in June while Fed holds at 4.25–4.50% — but for a company generating 80%+ revenue in USD, CAD strength is only a 10–15bps annual headwind on margins, not a thesis-breaker.
